Title: Alien lesson plan
Class time: 45 Mins Number of Classes: 1-2
Context Standards:
Science -Competency Goal 3: The learner will make observations and use appropriate technology to build an understanding of the earth/moon/sun system.
Art- Competency Goal 1: The learner will develop critical and creative thinking skills and perceptual awareness necessary for understanding and production art.
1.06- Refine images of self, pets, family, friends, and environment.
1.07- Elaborate on an idea or theme.
Competency Goal 2: The learner will develop skills necessary for understand and applying media, techniques, and processes.
2.01- Expands control and manipulation of the media and tools – Drawing
2.06- Create portraits still lifes and landscapes from real life observation or memory.
2.07- Depict self and others in a variety of real and imaginary situations with increasing detail.
Prior Skills and Prior learning:
Student will have knowledge of outer space and other planets.
Students will have skills using drawing materials.
Objectives:
Students will use their knowledge of outer space to create an imaginary outer space alien. They will discuss with the teacher and their classmates what elements that have chosen to place on their alien and how it is different or similar to humans.
Materials:
Pencils, markers, color pencils, and white paper.
Teacher preparation:
Teacher will have to prepare a visual example for students.
Teacher will make sure students have enough materials for this lesson.
Vocabulary Concepts: Form, emphasis, line, shape, size, value, harmony, dominance.
Visuals: Teacher provided visual.
Procedures:
Teacher will explain project, details will be given about how different the aliens can look from us, and why would they would give the alien certain aspects. Read the book: Alien in My house by Shenaaz Nanji. (15 mins)
Close your eyes and try to start imagining your alien.
How would your alien look similar to you? Different from you?
Is it a boy or girl?
How many eyes does it have? Does it have two like us? Where are they located?
Does it have ears or a nose? Are they large or small?
Think about their arms? Are they short like a t-Rex or long like octopus? Are they thick like a tree or skinny like a pencil?
Does it walk upright and have two legs like us? Or do they crawl like crab with many legs?
What color is their skin? Do they have smooth skin like glass or is it more furry like a cat?
Paper and drawing materials will be passed out. Teacher will explain that this is the beginning of the unit of exploring the students' imagination. (5 mins)
Students will brainstorm their alien and start working on them. They will work individually. (15 mins)
At the end of class student will collect their work and put supplies back. (5 mins)
Teacher will ask questions to the students about there aliens. These questions would relate to the visual look of there aliens and why they choose to give them special qualities. (5 mins)
Homework for students will be start thinking about where the alien lives.
Assessment:
Will not be giving on this assignment because the whole unit will be graded as a whole.
Follow up activity: The next activity is creating an environment for the students' alien. They would still think about where their alien has come from their imaginary planet. They would use their knowledge of the solar system and the universe to think about how far away their planet is and what it is like on that planet.
Adaptions for students: This activity can be modify by not looking at the alien as a figure but allow the student to describe the figure that they drew.
